August 14, 2007

The Juno mission was introduced to the public in Des Moines, Iowa at the State Fair on 14 August 2007 by Dr. Bill Kurth (Lead, WAVES instrument on Juno), George Hospodarsky, and Kathy Kurth from the University of Iowa along with Juno mission E/PO lead Rosalyn Pertzborn and her staff from UW-Madison. The booth featured an interactive kiosk that allowed visitors to "launch" an animation depicting the Juno mission. A large poster (anaglyph) prepared by JPL served as the backdrop for the kiosk to attract the visitors and presented a 3-D "view" of the Juno Spacecraft hovering over Jupiter.

The Iowa State Fair has been held since 1854, and in the last decade has been drawing over a million visitors each year over a ten day period. It has inspired a novel, "State Fair", three movies and the Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa has been participating in this fair for some time, and in 2007 featured the Cassini Mission currently returning data from Saturn and the planned Juno mission to Jupiter, both of which have instruments built by the University of Iowa.
